Licensing content to AI

Best platforms for licensing content to AI

For website articles, start with TollBit; for a book catalog, start with Created by Humans. Dappier is worth considering for live content feeds, while Cloudflare offers beta routes for paid crawling and downstream AI use. The right choice depends on what you own and what you want to license.

For publishers, authors and content owners offering existing articles, updating feeds or books to AI buyers.

TollBit

Best for
Website publishers who want to set article-access prices.
Why consider it
TollBit lets publishers price single-use summaries, grounding or citations separately from full-article display. You can also attach a custom license for an existing partner. Getting started involves an organization account, DNS verification, integration and activating your rates. Its documentation says it adds a transaction fee for AI buyers rather than taking a percentage of your rates. Stripe handles publisher payouts, scheduled early each month for the previous month’s transactions.
Tradeoffs
You need control of the website and help with its technical setup. A listed price is not a paid request: TollBit’s terms do not guarantee buyers or payment. Check the actual license for permitted uses, including any training rights.

Created by Humans

Best for
Authors and publishers licensing a book catalog.
Why consider it
Created by Humans has a book-specific workflow: verify your identity, claim or upload works, select AI rights and review licensing offers. Training and reference rights are described separately, so you can evaluate the use being requested. Its help center describes negotiated deal pricing and quarterly payments, either directly to rights holders or through a publisher when one is involved.
Tradeoffs
Read the offer-review settings carefully. The help guide, updated January 2025, describes a seven-day opt-out window and an automatic-approval option. Confirm the current settings, shared-rights approvals and deductions before joining a deal; we did not verify a public platform fee schedule.

Dappier

Best for
Publishers offering live content feeds to AI applications.
Why consider it
Dappier packages publisher content for retrieval by AI applications. Its publisher guide describes syncing content to an AI Agent, opening the Monetize tab, adding listing details, setting query pricing and publishing to its marketplace. This is a useful route to investigate when your content changes frequently and buyers need answers grounded in an updating feed.
Tradeoffs
Confirm the publisher fee, payout schedule and exact pricing unit before listing. The guide uses both “CPM” and “Price per Query” without resolving that unit in the instructions. Dappier also offers advertising products; an ad revenue share is not the same as a content-licensing payment.

Cloudflare

Best for
Site owners exploring paid crawler access or usage offers in beta.
Why consider it
Cloudflare offers two distinct routes. Pay Per Crawl lets a site set a price for crawler access and remains in closed beta. Pay Per Use, announced in beta on September 30, 2026, lets publishers review offers naming the AI buyer, paid use and price. The buyer reports downstream use; Cloudflare handles billing and monthly payments. This makes Cloudflare worth investigating if you want to manage those offers alongside your website infrastructure.
Tradeoffs
Confirm beta access first. Pay Per Crawl requires a dedicated Stripe Connect account and has settlement periods and minimum payout thresholds. Those requirements should not be assumed to apply to Pay Per Use. For that product, read each program’s permitted uses, reporting rules and training restrictions.

Choose the use before the platform

Selling access to an article, supplying information for an AI answer and allowing model training are different transactions. Start with the use you are willing to offer, then compare the platforms that support it.

TollBit’s standard options focus on single-use summaries or display. Dappier focuses on retrieving content for AI applications. Created by Humans offers book training and reference licensing. Cloudflare separates crawler access from downstream use. A platform’s presence on this list does not mean every one of those uses is included in its standard terms.

Compare what you keep, not just the listed price

Ask for a worked payout example using your own inventory. It should show the billable event, buyer price, platform deductions, settlement timing and minimum payout. A price per request, a price per query and a negotiated book license cannot be compared as if they were the same unit.

TollBit publishes a no-percentage fee policy for publisher rates. Cloudflare documents monthly payments, and Created by Humans’ help guide describes quarterly payments. We did not verify complete, comparable net-payment terms across all four platforms, so there is no supported “highest paying” pick.

Before you list your content

Prepare a small, clearly defined catalog first. Use the initial offer to check the practical details before expanding.

  1. Identify the works and rights you can offer, including any publisher or co-author approvals needed.
  2. Select the permitted use: retrieval, quotation, full display, training or another specifically defined use.
  3. Check how offers are accepted, how you can leave and what happens to previously licensed content.
  4. Request a sample usage report and payout calculation, then decide whether the arrangement fits your goals.
